First day of School

As I sit down to type my sweet little dog decides to lick my feet. Jack wants attention and Brien isn't home right now. I am surprised at how smart my dog is. Maybe it's because I haven't had any other dogs, but Jack has developed a good vocabulary. My current favorite example: he will take a toy out with him when he's staked in the yard and when he wants in I tell him to go get his toy. He will run and grab it and hurry back to the door to come inside. Usually he just drops it by the door when he comes in, so in that way he is just like a child.

Brien didn't work last Friday, and along with all the things he did for our 6 month mark he also took me for a quick lunch (I now have a mandatory 30 minutes compared with the mandatory 60 minutes at my last job). He spent some time in the library helping my to decorate and reorganize. He also worked a half day on Monday and came by in the afternoon to get more of the library aesthetics taken care of. Those first days last week I had to spend a lot of time just figuring out where supplies were and trying to learn how to operate the library computer system. The school has had a few different aides in charge since the librarian left 3 years ago, and it appears that I have a major reorganization project to accomplish and lots of new books to order. In defense of the past library assistants, it sounds as if they were often pulled to do other work and weren't able to give the library the attention it needed. If it wasn't for Brien's help these last few days I would not have felt comfortable letting people through the doors. I spent this past Monday and Tuesday stapling the student handbooks (that's really all I did) my triceps got a little work out (I had to use a heavy duty manual stapler). Last night I noticed that my arms felt sore, as if I had been lifting weights. I guess that's just the hazards of the job.

I feel better now that the first day of school is behind me. The kids appear to be friendly and some of them are quite excited to start coming in. One little 7th grader even came in during his 4 minute passing period to get Book 7 of A Series of Unfortunate Events. I looked over the books and found some that I look forward to reading as well.
